The Writing Center Philosophy

Our goal is to support writers in their short- and long-term goals. Writers usually come to us with a specific, deadline-driven project, but we always remember that writing continues to develop over a lifetime.

Our approach is generally non-directive. In other words, we support writers in owning their own work and in making their own decisions.

Our approach is confidential. We work with the writer—we don’t report to professors about student work.

Our approach is flexible. Every writer is unique; each person’s process is their own. We work with writers to identify how to help them the most. We support thoughtful and innovative problem-solving in supporting writers.

Our approach is collaborative. We work with writers who come to us (not on them or for them).

Our approach is iterative. We love it when writers come back again and again. Let us know if you are interested in a standing appointment.

Our approach is research-based. Our team stays up to date with writing center scholarship and seeks opportunities to conduct research and share findings.

Our approach is informed by universal design for learning. Good writing center pedagogy enhances accessibility for everyone, regardless of neurotypicality.
