What to Expect When You Come to the Writing Center
Writing Center peer coaches and faculty consultants can help with any project at any stage.
Here are some tips to help you get the most out of your session.
- For in-person sessions, check in at the LWSC front desk on the lower level of Gleeson Library. It is a good idea to arrive a few minutes early, because sometimes it takes a minute to find your Writing Center person in their second-floor study room.
- For video appointments, be sure to check your email for instructions on accessing the appointment.
- Be ready to share your writing project via Google Docs. For in-person appointments, bring a device to access your project. Some people like to bring a printed copy.
- The coach or consultant will ask what you are working on, so plan to explain your project and your goals for it.
- Since sessions are only 25 minutes, they’ll also ask what you want to focus on. It may not be possible to discuss the whole project in one session.
- If you have an assignment prompt or instructions (or any other relevant materials, such as assigned readings), it’s great to have them available. Your Writing Center person may recommend that you look at the assignment instructions together.
- 50-minute appointments and weekly standing appointments are available by special request. Ask your coach or consultant if they think a longer session or standing appointments would be appropriate.
- Please let us know if you need any accommodations to make a session more accessible for you. We work closely with Student Disability Services (SDS) and the Learning, Writing, and Speaking Center team (LWSC) to make our center accessible to all.
- Come back! We love it when writers return again and again. We hope we will be a regular part of your writing process here at USF.
