Emotional Intelligence

What is Emotional Intelligence (EQ)?

Simply put, emotional intelligence (EQ) is about being smarter with feelings. It's blending thinking AND feeling to make optimal decisions.

Emotional intelligence is a set of competencies (skills) that develop with practice. Contrary to popular belief, EQ is not something people innately have or don't. Anyone can become competent with practice!

Western society tends to remove emotions from the decision-making process, yet the reality is that every single human being experiences emotions, it's biologically manufactured by the brain!

The sooner we begin learning to exist alongside our emotions as partners, the sooner we learn how to make better choices that align with values, logic, reasoning, and all the important skills expected of us in modern society.

Why Does EQ Matter?

Research shows that people who practice EQ are more likely to experience success in:

  • Effectiveness (Decision-Making and Influence)
  • Relationships (Network and Community)
  • Wellbeing (Mental and Physical Health)
  • Quality of Life (Achievement and Satisfaction)

Regardless of whether you want to become a CEO, parent, data analyst, and/or volunteer firefighter, EQ helps you in every role to be and become the best version of yourself for and with others.

How Can I Learn More?

Student Leadership and Engagement (SLE) offers free introductory workshops to learn the value, framework, and skills to get you started on your journey, thanks to ASUSF Senate and Graduate Student Senate (GSS)!

Those who attend workshops complete a brief assessment that unlocks their current competency in practicing the three steps of EQ and balance with important Life Success Factors (listed above).

Workshops require no advanced registration and are held in person and virtually to any USF students (graduate & undergraduate) at all campuses.

Workshops are facilitated by certified EQ Practitioner & Assessor, Bob Just.
