Student Work Opportunities

There are several good opportunities every semester for both graduate and undergraduate students to further build up their economics skills by teaching or working for the economics department.

Tutoring (undergraduates or graduates, majors or non-majors)

Students who have received an A- or better in a course may work as tutors in it, with the recommendation of a faculty member. Tutors for Econ 111, 112, 120, 311, and 312 are always needed.

Tutoring provides a great experience to solidify your understanding of core economics concepts and to strengthen interpersonal and teaching skills.

As of fall 2018 pay was $17/hour.  Foreign students may apply even if they do not have a social security number, and may work up to twenty hours per week.

Teaching Assistantships (Master's students only)

Graduate students who have earned a GPA of 3.5 or above may apply to serve as teaching assistants for undergraduate classes.  If you are interested, please directly contact professors who you might like to work with.

Research Assistantships

Some faculty may be able to hire research assistants from time to time, depending on their research needs and funding sources. If this is of interest to you, you should contact specific faculty members directly.  In general, you should choose a faculty member in whose class you received an excellent grade.  Before contacting the faculty member, review their web page closely to make sure you are familiar with their past research and current projects.
