XARTS Web Server
content last updated 11-12-2024
ABOUT
Starting Fall 2023, XARTS transitioned all student and faculty websites previously hosted by XARTS to a CS department server. At this time, we are no longer creating new accounts for students.
Starting in Fall 2023, all new student webpages will be hosted on Git Hub.
CAPACITY
Each user's folder has an 8GB storage limit. Once this limit is reached, you won't be able to add more files.
VPN Requirement
Please note you can only connect to the SFTP server when using a lab computer or from home using USF's VPN.
You need to download the USF VPN; you can do that here.
SFTP ACCESS
You can access your XARTS Network Drive by using an FTP application, a.k.a. an "FTP client," that supports the SFTP protocol. Cyberduck, Transmit, and Fetch are a few of the many SFTP apps available for Mac. WinSCP is just one of many popular SFTP apps available for Windows.
No matter which FTP client you choose, you'll need some or all of the following information:
- Server a.k.a. Host: stargate.cs.usfca.edu
- Connection Method: SFTP
- Username and Password: your CWID is your password (How to find your CWID)
- Port Number: 22 (standard port for SFTP)
- Path: /home/xarts/UsfUserName
For a step-by-step guide to setting up your SFTP client, please look here.
ADVISORIES & WARNINGS
Data Cleanup
Please be aware that an automatic cleanup process usually runs in the summer. It deletes all files and directories that haven't been updated in the past year.
Learn how to ensure your data isn't deleted here.
BACK UP YOUR FILES
The department does not back up the files on your Network Drive. Hence, any loss due to user error, severe hardware failure, or other disaster could be permanent. Therefore, we highly recommend you to back up your files to other locations, such as a personal storage device or an online file storage service like Google Drive or Dropbox.
