Technology Expo

The Tech Fair Expo ended with a blast with over 200 attendees. The day started with a warm welcome from Shirley McGuire, our Senior Vide Provost of Academic Affairs, and Jared Stein, keynote speaker on hybrid course design. We had three panel presentations headed by both faculty and students; sixteen vendors booths and four vendors' presentations; and nine USF booths. Great raffle prizes and give-aways, good food and conversations added much fun to the learning day. Our thank you goes to everybody who had made this event possible. Below is a photo recap of the exciting day.  Enjoy!

A day of discovery and learning. Meet with colleagues who have successfully implemented technology solutions in their courses. Keynote Title: Blended On Purpose
(And Other Lessons Learned When My First Hybrid Course Failed)

This session will explore simple principles for hybrid course design through real-world examples, ideas for using Canvas to leverage the best of both worlds, and encourage a discussion on common challenges.

Presenter: Jared Stein, Instructure Canvas
Co-authored a book on Blended Learning, titled: Essentials for Blended Learning: A Standards-Based Guide (Essentials of Online Learning).

Jared helps instructors create effective blended and online learning so that all students can have great experiences in education. He believes in applying research to design, and encourages real-world practice, openness, and simplicity. Jared has helped institutions address new challenges through both grassroots, faculty-driven initiatives (e.g. open education) and top-level leadership strategies (e.g. growing online and hybrid offerings).

As VP of Higher Education Strategy for Instructure, Jared and team look at the problems that teaching and learning faces in order to identify ways that technology can have a positive impact. This work is often done in collaboration with colleges and universities, or as part of the Canvas Community. The Research team shares what it learns both internally and the larger educational community at canvaslms.com/research.

11 - 12 p.m.

Panel Presentation on Hybrid Instruction

Join a panel of faculty from the School of Nursing and Health Professions and learn about how they are using the hybrid course delivery model to innovate their teaching at USF. What is a hybrid course? A hybrid course is a type of course delivery model where the instructor conducts part of their course in the classroom and part of it online, creating more flexibility for students and faculty, among other benefits.

Panelists will include:

Margaret Hansen, Health Informatics - Margaret will share about e-learning and informatics in her hybrid Social Media and Health Education elective course.

Cathy Coleman, RN to MSN Clinical Nurse Leader - Cathy will share about using the hybrid classroom to open up new opportunities to experiment with adaptations of the "flipped" classroom resulting in increased learner engagement, fun and teacher gratification.

Greg DeBourgh, Bachelor of Science in Nursing - Greg will share about using hybrid instructional designs to meet the challenge of covering a large scope of content while facilitating deep learning.

Kelly L'Engle, Population Health Sciences - Kelly will share about assigning student teams during online weeks of her hybrid course to increase engagement, application and practice, and peer-to-peer learning.

12 - 1 p.m.

Student Panel led by Jonathan Hunt, Co-Director of the Tracy Seeley Center for Teaching Excellence.

Faculty learn about new teaching technologies from colleagues, developers, teaching centers, and instructional technologists—but what do students have to say about teaching with technology?

This session brings together undergraduate students from USF’s many departments and schools to discuss the student perspective on learning technologies in the classroom. We’ll hear about the most effective technologies experience by USF students, as well as about challenges with educational technology.

1 - 2 p.m.

Panel Presentation on Active Learning

Join this session on active learning to hear about three different approaches to using technology to engage students both online and in the classroom.

Panelists will include:

Laureen Turner, School of Nursing and Health Professions - Laureen will share her use of Poll Everywhere to stimulate classroom discussion and assessment of learning.

Kyoko Suda, Modern and Classical Languages - Kyoko will present her research on implementing a flipped model of instruction that allows students to interact with learning material online so that in-class time can be used to practice Japanese.

Ed Munnich, Psychology - Ed will share his use of iClicker to engage students in the review of course concepts and evidence from cognitive science.
