GenAI Certificate Program for Faculty & Staff

USF AI Certificate Program

The AI Certification program is structured to support a deeper understanding of the AI tools and practices for use in Higher Education. Complete 5 or more workshops, along with a short final project, to earn a AI Certificate. Conversely, you can also take individual courses without pursuing a certificate from either required or elective.

Learning Objectives

By the end of the Program, participants will be able to:

  • Identify AI literacy skills and their applications to teaching, learning, and institutional practices 
  • Prepare to use AI tools safely and securely
  • Develop a level of competency with one or more AI tools, such as Google Gemini
  • Improve AI prompting strategies to generate expected output
  • Identify the best pedagogical practices for integrating AI tools into learning activities and assessments in a responsible and critical manner.

Making Sense of AI Literacy

(Required for faculty and staff—take this class before others.)

Overview of AI and its impact on higher education:
  • Reiterate the need for AI literacy in education and professional spheres
  • Provide an introduction to a range of AI applications and integrations
  • Direct participants to the ITS AI Hub website for continuing updates
  • Outline the overarching concerns and benefits of AI in the higher ed context
  • Help participants consider equity & ethics across AI use & decisioning
  • Provide a lens to take in coming topics in the certificate series.

AI Tools: Explore ChatGPT

Join us for an informative session on ChatGPT! In this class, you will learn how to use this tool to support teaching and learning, explore the pros and cons, and gain a foundational understanding of its capabilities. Perfect for those new to this GenAI tool, this session will enhance your knowledge and confidence in utilizing AI for educational purposes.

  • Introduction to ChatGPT as a selected LLM tool.

Agentic AI: Trends, Opportunities, and Examples

Agentic AI is on the rise and becoming more visible in our daily lives, but it isn’t always clear how to recognize it and what to look for. In this class, we will cover the following:

  • Develop a general understanding of agentic AI,
  • Identify agentic AI in different scenarios and applications,
  • Compare agentic AI functionality to GenAI,
  • Use agentic AI in deep research mode in ChatGPT.

GenAI Prompt Engineering for Learning, Teaching and Research

Discover how to write effective prompts to be more successful in your use of ChatGPT and other GenAI chatbots. Learn about two prompt frameworks to guide your process for writing more contextualized and persona-focused prompts.

  • Apply best practices for prompting to leverage GenAI capabilities for specific tasks and contexts.
  • Understand how prompt frameworks can help approach and organize effective prompt writing and review.

GenAI detection, Feedback tools, and Assessment

Turnitin is USF's anti-plagiarism and citation-checking tool and is integrated into Canvas. In this class, we will cover the following:

  • Turnitin’s AI detection tool will be discussed and demonstrated.
  • Discussion of the pros and cons of using an AI detection tool and how to communicate the use of the tool to students.
  • Concerns over bias and false positives will be discussed.
  • Mention of Gradescope as an AI grading tool.

Explore GenAI Tools for Images

Learn how to write descriptive prompts to quickly and easily generate extraordinary images.  We will explore features in three main tools: Adobe's Firefly, Adobe Express, and ChatGPT, and compare outputs.

In this workshop, you will learn how to use Google NotebookLM to support teaching and learning and gain a foundational understanding of its capabilities.

  • Compare NotebookLM and how it differs from general-purpose AI tools.
  • Identify the key features available in our NotebookLM plan.
  • Prepare to set up and use a notebook optimally, including the Studio panel.
  • Examine NotebookLM in action through a live demo and use cases.
