Active Learning Intensive
This summer, with support from the provost’s office, Educational Technology Services in partnership with Assistant Professor Leslie Bach (Biology) and Associate Professor Kelly L'Engle (Public Health) will host USF's first Active Learning Intensive (ALI). The three-day intensive program (week of July 29) brings full- and part-time faculty together to learn about active learning pedagogy, hear from experts in the field, participate in active learning activities, and start planning for fall curriculum redevelopment.
Participants who complete all program requirements will receive a $750 stipend (full-time faculty) or be compensated hourly for participation (part-time faculty).
Learning Objectives
By the end of the Intensive, participants will be able to:
- Analyze and implement various active learning activities to re-engage disengaged or passive learners.
- Integrate inclusive active learning activities in multiple modalities to meet your students’ various learning styles, cultural backgrounds and accessibility needs.
- Evaluate and demonstrate the benefits and limitations of using Generative AI (GenAI) tools like ChatGPT to enhance active learning experiences.
- Create a plan to incorporate active learning strategies to support course learning objectives.
Program Format
The ETS Active Learning Intensive is a 3 day experience packed with activities, collaborations and planning. It will be offered during the week of July 29 - Aug 2, and each session will run from 10 am to 2 pm each day. More detail on exact dates will be communicated to participants.
Program requirements
- Attend fully the three day intensive;
- Develop a plan to incorporate active learning strategies in your Fall course and share this plan with colleagues at an August event;
- Share your discoveries and next steps from your Fall course at the end of semester luncheon in December.
