What is Generative Artificial Intelligence (GenAI)?

Generative AI (GenAI) is an AI branch that creates new content by learning from vast data sources like the internet, applications, and user input. Using advanced algorithms, it generates original outputs based on this knowledge.

At USF, we support using GenAI to enhance work and learning, but responsible use is essential and you must adhere to the University's Guidelines for Responsible Use of AI

USF Credentials
If you're planning to use your USF credentials (username or email) to create an account in a free or paid subscription, you must adhere to these guidelines.

Technology Acquisition Approval
Per the Purchasing Guidelines anything above $10K has to be approved the VP-CIO.

Claude Chat is Anthropic's conversational AI assistant, approved at USF for Public-classification data, known for careful, nuanced responses on longer documents and reasoning tasks. Gemini is available to every USF staff, faculty and student.

Turnitin's AI writing detection is designed to help instructors identify text that may have been produced by a generative AI tool. Turnitin states its detector achieves a false positive rate under 1% for documents with more than 20% AI-generated content, but the company is explicit that the percentage should not be used as the sole basis for adverse action against a student — it requires human judgment alongside an institution's academic policies. Detection also has limits: it's built for prose and doesn't reliably assess poetry, code, bullet points, or tables.
