Health Insurance for International Students

Requirement
As a condition of enrollment, University of San Francisco (USF) requires students to have health insurance, both to protect against unexpected high medical costs and to provide access to quality care. The following students will be charged the health insurance premium on their Student Account as a separate fee.
- All international students and scholars registering for at least 1 credit hour or more

Access Plan Benefits
All international students registered for one unit or more will be automatically enrolled in and charged for the USF-endorsed health insurance plan. Open Enrollment/Waiver Periods
- Fall semester: June 27 through September 1
- Spring semester: November 30 through February 1
Health Insurance Waiver/Enrollment Period Now Open
International students who have health insurance coverage comparable to or better than the USF-endorsed health insurance may waive this requirement with the Health Promotion Services office during the open waiver period. Coverage must be for the entire Spring 2026 semester. Learn more about the insurance requirement. Deadline is February 1, 2026.
- If you will be studying at USF with a student visa, i.e., F-1, J-1, F-2, and J-2, you will need to meet the international student waiver criteria and complete the international student health insurance waiver to ensure that you have medical repatriation coverage.
- Plans underwritten outside of the United States are not acceptable when applying for an insurance waiver. The University cannot adequately support our students enrolling in these programs, which has become even more important when considering the current COVID-19 pandemic.
Voluntary Enrollment
Students with an official Leave of Absence (LOA) or are in the Optional Practical Training (OPT) program are eligible to purchase the USF-endorsed student health insurance per semester for up to one (1) academic year during open waiver/enrollment periods. Deadline is February 1, 2026.
