Free OTC COVID Tests

Effective January 15, 2022, group health plans and health insurers must cover over-the-counter (OTC) COVID-19 tests authorized or otherwise approved by the FDA without involvement of a healthcare provider.

  • Free at-home test kits will be covered from January 15, 2022 through the end of the declared public health emergency (not yet announced). Any tests purchased prior to 1/15/22 are not reimbursable.
  • Covers FDA-authorized or approved over-the-counter (OTC) COVID-19 tests purchased online or in-person without direct involvement from a healthcare provider.
  • These tests should be free to you and your covered dependents for diagnostic or treatment purposes and are not intended for employment-related purposes such as workplace screening.
  • There is a limit of eight covered tests per month per participant, and this does not otherwise limit coverage of COVID-19 tests administered or prescribed by your health care providers. If testing kits contain two tests per kit, then four kits per month would be covered.
